Proper ammo storage is an often overlooked topic of discussion. Improper storage can not only create issues for you down the road. Exposure to moisture and temperature extremes can negatively impact the performance of your ammunition. On the other hand, properly stored ammunition can last indefinitely.
So what’s the best way to store it?
As you may have surmised from the first paragraph, keeping your ammunition dry and at a fairly stable “room temperature” (between 55°F and 85°F) are the most important aspects to consider. So here are three simple steps to ensure your ammunition is store properly:
- Keep your ammunition in its manufacturer package (unless the packaging has become wet or damaged).
- Stack your ammunition in airtight storage containers, such as a metal or plastic ammo can (you can even toss in a silica packet for good measure).
- Stack your ammo cans in a dry space that maintains temperatures between 55°F and 85°F (safes, closets etc…).
That's it. Pretty simple, huh?
